Information: Character Requests

about character requests

This is an all-purpose page for requesting the most common things you'd need mod permission for. In general, characters in Singularity enjoy broad freedoms with what they can do and acquire; it's only high-risk, rare and/or questionable items that will need to be cleared in advance. Don't worry-- almost all requests will have no problem whatsoever being approved, and if we have some concerns, we're much more likely to discuss it with you than reject anything.

This is also the page to request canon updates for your characters.

item requests

items from the junkyard

Characters can obtain raw materials from the Junkyard, aka Zone 00, the string room where they appeared when first arriving on Sacrosanct. Scrap metal, raw elements, structures and devices can all be found here. Most of these materials, like metals and normal devices (music players, carpentry tools, computer hardware) do not need to be requested here; just assume your character found them. If it's something more advanced or dangerous, we'd appreciate it if you erred on the side of caution and checked it with us first.

Some items you might find in the Junkyard that you can request (not an exhaustive list):
  • Guns
  • Advanced computer equipment
  • Dangerous and/or fictional elements
  • Alien technology
  • Premodern technology
  • Small dinosaurs
In general, living creatures are okay so long as they aren't pests or very large or dangerous. So, no tribbles, sorry.

canon updates

Canon updates work a little differently in Singularity than in other games. Instead of characters "going home" and returning, the IC explanation for canon updates is this:

Any character that appears on Sacrosanct is, at the moment before he/she/it comes through the space/time rift, understood to be at the most updated version of their canon. This is a floating state for those characters with unfinished canons. The rift is responsible for concealing memories and even changing the physical forms of those who pass through it. For example, a character who loses their hand and has it replaced by a chainsaw may appear in Sacrosanct with their flesh hand fully intact and no memory of the chainsaw. However, because the rift interacts with the teleporters on the station (there is, in fact, a teleporter just inside the rift itself that seems to still be connected to the rest of the network, but cannot be physically accessed), any time a character uses a teleporter he/she/it runs the "risk" of being canon updated. Memories may appear and even physical changes may occur. So our example character might walk into one teleporter with his hand and out another teleporter with his chainsaw, suddenly remembering the events that led up to it.

How exactly is this possible? Hypatia isn't quite sure and likes to pretend things that are beyond her ability to predict don't exist, and the rift itself doesn't answer questions.

Some players may wish to canon update their characters with new items or equipment. If the item in question is larger than would feasibly fit inside a regular teleportation unit (which is meant to accommodate one or two people at a time), the character being updated will find themselves spat out from a teleporter nearest the Junkyard, and their item will be waiting for them there if the character chooses to go look.

Please note that characters are welcome to request items without requiring a canon update. For example, if you want to request Kevin Flynn's lightcycle for Sam instead of his substandard Grid lightcycle, but don't want to update Sam to that particular part of the movie, the Kevin Flynn lightcycle can be requested as a simple item request without a canon update. In that scenario, however, the piece of equipment in question may or may not be unfamiliar to the character, and that must be reflected in their actions accordingly.

character modifications

Some players employ the teleporters to temporarily change their character, whether to another species, sex, or into another person’s body entirely. For the most part, you are free to do this without requiring mod permission; however, if the modification you’re planning on is more complicated or involves more than immediate CR, please drop it here to let us look it over.

Your Name: Linds
Character Name: Gem (AU)
Character Journal: survivethesiren
Nature of Item: a second disc
How Your Character is Obtaining It: Flynn is creating it.
Briefly Explain the Intended Purpose of the Item: Gem wants a second disc to back up her current files/personality/memories. Due to Magneto being on the station, eh could easily wipe her systems. She'd rather just be rebooted than have to die to get her memories back.

Your Name: Danzy
Character Name: Loki
Character Journal: [personal profile] flyting
Reference Point of the Canon Update: After getting a faceful of Coulson's big-ass Destroyer gun
How Will This Change the Character?:
Context: Loki's just survived his deep dive off the Bifrost and landed right into the Chitauri horde of warm protective colonizing feelings. He somehow managed to convince them that he could help their cause, and was given a disco stick and an army to use however he needed to in exchange for his fetching the Tesseract. He succeeds on getting the Tesseract, but Thor comes down from Asgard through comic logic and crash-lands on Loki's back against a cliff, effectively putting a snag on his world domination plans. Words are said, Iron Man interrupts, and a slapfight ensues over who gets to chain Loki to their version of jail. He lets himself get captured, and spends a whole helicarrier trip nursing a sprained back. (Thanks, bro.)

Outcome: At this canon point, Loki has moved on - if only one step forward and ten sideways - from being the second son so desperate to prove himself to Daddy. He's still got the same issues as he did in Thor, but is now actively seeking a way to get back at the people he feels has wronged him. He doesn't hide his prejudices any longer, generally being a condescending asshole to nearly everyone. He's denying any relations with Thor and his kin, as well, in attempts to divorce himself from his history. He still hasn't rejected his Jotun heritage, however, and still thinks of himself as Asgardian.

Finally, he's become more open to the notion of doing things for his own sake. He's been doing this for a while now, but he's finally chucking the guilt that goes with it. If he's nice to someone now, it's probably for some creepy-ass reason.

Any Large Items?: The glowstick of destiny (the Tesseract-powered scepter), though for all intents and purposes it's only a 20-40% energy amplifier and its mind-control powers are completely locked down. (I might ask for the mind-control to be unlocked for a plot request, but that won't be for a while yet. Is this okay?)

Your Name: Dash
Character Name: Miranda Lawson
Character Journal: [personal profile] ancillary
Nature of Item: Tracers, 15 ct.
How Your Character is Obtaining It: Salvaging inconsequential tech in the junkyard to fashion small, pin-sized discs that can stick on most surfaces that inject small, bio-tech microbes through the skin without punctuating it. Once injected Miranda can trace just about anything from her omni-tool until either her selected target is forgotten, or the bio-tech in their system degrades after a few weeks.

Note: Tracers are canon in Mass Effect, but their exact workings are not explained. Also, Miranda will need a good chunk of time to fashion these. In the neighborhood of one to two weeks.

Briefly Explain the Intended Purpose of the Item: Miranda frequently relies on "tagging" others to track their movements for her own machinations and security. Typically, she just wants to know where people are at any given time. Miranda will not be able to track another character without OOC permission from any affected players and characters. IC permission is, however, laughable.

Your Name: Aaron
Character Name: Jade Harley
Character Journal: [personal profile] astrometry
Reference Point of the Canon Update: End of Act 6 Intermission 2 -- immediately after chasing Jaspersprite.
How Will This Change the Character?: No new abilities; she'll come back with a little bit of a conflicted attitude about her boyfriend because lol fourteen year old relationships what -- but that's easily worked around because Jade would be quick to tell herself to shoosh. Also she would officially be 14 in canon! Which she already was in Singularity, but it would be officialish. She'd have a better understanding of the things that cause her to bark and growl as a dog -- particularly Jaspersprite and cats that go meow! Other than that, not much; she's still very bubbly and optimistic, just as intelligent. Not much has changed between 13 and 14, other than she seems a little bit more adept at video games and perhaps slightly more romantically aware than she was previously. Mostly this canon update is an attempt to fix some characterization things that I'm not very happy with, starting with all the injuries she's sustained while on Sacrosanct! If possible, I'd like them to be removed -- including the robotic arm and the eye she's currently missing -- so she'll go back to full 100% Jade, no selfish robolimbs attached.

Overall, this will probably help a lot with her canon CR -- particularly Karkat and Davesprite that I can think of, though I'd imagine that other people will also be benefitted by this -- and give me a different place to start off at when coming back from hiatus on June 1st. Since she's teleporternapped currently, this should be no problem.
Any Large Items?: Nope!

Your Name: Carolyn
Character Name: Emma Frost
Character Journal: [personal profile] myownbestfriend
Reference Point of the Canon Update: Death of Captain America (March 2007, or Uncanny X-Men #486, in the middle of the Shi'ar war that doesn't affect her at all)
How Will This Change the Character?:

1. The mutants who survived M-Day with powers intact ("the 198") are confined to the Xavier Institute grounds, guarded by giant mutant-killing robots "for their own safety," because that isn't at all the kind of thing the most powerful mutants in the world would resent. IT'S NOT AN INTERNMENT CAMP WHY WOULD YOU THINK THAT.

2. Emma loses another batch of students to people who hate mutants.

3. Her former colleague, Sean Cassidy (Banshee), for whom it's strongly hinted she at one time had feelings, dies.

4. Her boyfriend Scott Summers (Cyclops) has another long-lost family member. This one's a brother. He has one of the most idiotic backstories in comic history, his name is Vulcan, and he's a douche. He's the one responsible for Banshee's death, but he also added a bunch of evidence to the "Professor Xavier is a massive tool" pile. WHICH EMMA KNEW ALL ALONG GLAD THE REST OF YOU ARE CATCHING UP. So she she's torn on the guy.

5. The Breakworld arc of Astonishing concludes. Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) sacrifices herself to save the world, and Emma feels bad, because Kitty is another one of the students she failed.

6. She's not exactly happy with Tony Stark (Iron Man), the architect of most of the events in the Civil War crossover plot, but when it mattered, he came through at great political and personal risk for the 198, which went a good distance toward redeeming him in her eyes. (This is when he was retconned in as an old flame.)

She has little personal development across this time period; it's mostly just a bunch of comic-book insanity in which she runs around being a flawless bitch. The one substantial change is that she feels secure in her relationship with Scott.

tl;dr Things have gotten worse for mutants and Emma's even more down on humans than she was before.

Any Large Items?: Nope.

Character Name: Rosalie "Ro" Rowen
Character Journal: [personal profile] thecarisboring
Reference Point of the Canon Update: To the end of the final episode of The Zeta Project, "The Hologram Man," after she and Zeta witness Dr. Selig's apparent death.
How Will This Change the Character?: Well, she's not going to be happy, and if a Zeta shows up she won't be as gung-ho to get home since their major goal - getting Zeta's creator to prove he's not dangerous - now seems impossible. (Word of God says he's not dead, but she doesn't know that.) She'll also know precisely what set Zeta apart from other robots and makes him so human.

HOWEVER, her canon update also brings an item with her that she picked up at the beginning of the episode.

Nature of item: Portable holo-emitter worn on the wrist.

Briefly Explain the Intended Purpose of the Item: Holographic disguise. It can scan in a person's image and project it convincingly around the wearer, down to details like the wind blowing clothes and hair. It won't fool infrared, et cetera, but the image is very convincing.

If that ability is too much, it can be broken and she'll be looking for someone to fix it, or getting in to trouble because it starts malfunctioning randomly. It would be nice if she could make use of it, but honestly the potential for shenanigans with it broken would be fun too. The technology is advanced even for her time, and there's only one known scientist who's perfected it. Either way there's a LOT of potential for her to screw up because of it.

Any Large Items?: Nope. The holo-emitter is about the size of a wrist brace and she'll be wearing it. (Reference pic here.)

Nature of Item: A very empty cryogenic stasis container. It would be Nora's container, but naturally she is missing from it.
How Your Character is Obtaining It: I would like for it to be a personal matter on Freeze's behalf, where he would be utilizing his data from his own studies and the attempts to stabilize the Rift with Jin way back in order to try to pull Nora to Sacrosanct. This would, naturally, fail as he would only be pulling an empty stasis container to himself.

If this is unacceptable, he would be just retrieving it from the junkyard.

Briefly Explain the Intended Purpose of the Item: It'll be a personal trigger for Freeze to revert and lament about his unfortunate life. It's purely for character development.

Your Name: Surge
Character Name: Eve
Character Journal: [personal profile] halfheartedcurse
Reference Point of the Canon Update: Descending into Depths I (and later Necropolis II) after beating The Caves I and The Catacombs II.

How Will This Change the Character?:
Okay, first I need to explain something.

The game has an expansion and I bought it with real person money. The expansion is called Wrath of the Lamb and basically it added new floors called The Cellar (irrelevant because she finished both Basement levels) The Catacombs and Necropolis. They also added Utero to interchange with The Womb and The Cathedral to interchange with Sheol. There are new enemies on these new floors and new bosses at the end of them. Also, some new items that are not showcasing themselves in this update.

This doesn't matter too much retroactively, since she's already gone through Basement I & II, but for any future canon updates up until either her shit is done or I drop her, she will be going through one old floor and one new floor. It's not so much a new game as it is added content, since its DLC. It's like a Shepard who didn't do Shadow Broker and then the mun who plays that Shepard played through Shadow Broker and canon updated so their Shepard could have that info and experience from that DLC.

At this point, Eve has now fought and killed two more bosses (Gurdy and The Blighted Ovum). She has also killed Greed, who was in one of the shops that she unlocked. She's become accustomed to donating blood for money and has bought and used Speed Up pill, increasing her speed permanently. Her agility did not go up with it, so sometimes when she's running she'll hit things she doesn't intend to, and it'll be like that until she figures out how to recalibrate her whateverthefuck.

In Binding of Isaac you find power-ups after every Boss fight. For the sake of not giving her more shit to carry and also keeping her stable as far as powers go, Eve has found and eaten the Breakfast and Lunch power-ups, increasing her health capacity to 4 hearts. Overtly, Eve now looks more like a fit, if traumatized, 13-year old girl. A bit taller (5' 3" as opposed to 4' 11", making her Babylon form about 6' 3" instead of 5' 11" since she takes a foot when she changes) and less malnourished because it may be dog food and rotten milk, but it's ~*~magic~*~ dog food and rotten milk so shut up. Covertly, her pain tolerance is now ridiculously high for her age. There is also one Treasure Room on each floor. She was unable to open the one in Caves I and received Teleport from the one in Catacombs II (more on that in Items).

Personality-wise, Eve will come back having witnessed a whole new level of fucked up shit. Well, two whole new levels. She is actually getting more used to the sheer horror that is her life, which scares the shit out of her because Eve is a never-ending cycle of fear and WTFery. She's even more willing to throw herself in front of attacks to trigger her curse or dead bird, and she's actually become even more of a determinator when it comes to the idea that she can beat her shitty odds and escape because she has refused to consider giving up and dying as an option. She's gotten better at fighting enemies, though she still lacks any sort of definite style and, at her core, still fights like a scared reckless teenager. Also, weird looking insects scare her more than before, and spiders now terrify the SHIT out of her.

She also walked into a Devil Room and ran out after flipping a shit. They didn't so much converse as she saw that he cut up her "lost" cat and cursed its body parts, then tried to sell them to her for her health. Again.

Any Large Items?: No. Breakfast, Lunch and the Speed Up pill have already been eaten, and Teleport is a remote control.

SPEAKING OF TELEPORT.

Teleport is a power-up that magically teleports the user to a random location whenever the button is pressed. It will only apply to the zone she is in at the time and can only be used once every 12 hours, with no roll-over chances because that would get real stupid real fast and there is only so much stupid I can ask other to tolerate from this canon. Additionally, because they are both Spacebar-locked items in Binding of Isaac, the Yum Heart and Teleport will magically repel each other, allowing Eve to only have one on her person at a time.

Your Name: Liana
Character Name: Liara
Character Journal: [personal profile] asari_scientist
Nature of Item: tiny spy cameras and shit
How Your Character is Obtaining It: hello I have credits and have spent time as an information broker and know how to build things
Briefly Explain the Intended Purpose of the Item: This isn't so much a "can I have this item from the Junkyard" request so much as it is a "may I plant cameras all around Sacrosanct" request.

Liara is an information broker, and part of what she does involves keeping tabs on what people are doing. She would set up cameras around the station, at least one by each teleporter, and several others throughout the zones in "hotspots" where she knows people like to visit. These would be entirely opt-in, and I would always ask permission before assuming Liara has seen something, and I'd try to keep it realistic just what she could see since she'd have such few cameras (she can't just place them everywhere like Hypatia can).

Mostly, what I'd like for her to do is be able to have her own sort of Shadow Broker dossiers, with all sorts of miscellaneous information about what characters do and what they're up to and the like. Again, entirely opt-in, and there'd be a post set up on my journal so people could volunteer what Liara knows about them.
mcfussyfangs: ([Switch] Conservation of Mass)

[personal profile] mcfussyfangs 2012-06-11 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Your Name: Surge
Character Name: Kanaya Maryam
Character Journal: [personal profile] mcfussyfangs
Nature of Item: Basically Kanaya is going to find a seriously fucking awesome make-up kit. It will be called FABULOUSLY CLASSY DEATH ARSENAL.
The kit will include:
2 STARLIGHT CALAMITY eyeliner pencils - They turn into something like a glaive except the blade part is a like sort of blade shaped chainsaw.
1 tube of DRILLING WITH QUESTIONS mascara - Turns into a chainsaw + drill + jousting lance combo
1 AFFLICTION OF ANGELS blush compact - Basically turns into something like this but more rounded on the bladed side.
2 COLORS OF CALAMITY eyeshadow palettes (4 colors each) - Turn into a pair of chainsaw brass knuckles.
1 tube of ICE BURN clear lipgloss - Turns into a chainsaw sword.

Do not ask me about the mechanics of any of these or how they work because she has a foldable chainsaw lipstick and I haven't even figured that shit out yet. Pretty much all these will be as strong as her original one, which is to say it's more about the fact that they are chainsaws and that she can put a lot of force behind them because of the whole "vampire super strength" thing. The mascara will be particularly good at drilling through metal, though theoretically she could do that with any of them.

How Your Character is Obtaining It: Junkyard.
Briefly Explain the Intended Purpose of the Item: They're chainsaws and also make-up. The chainsaws are for fucking things up. The make-up is for looking fancy. Mostly it's so she has an arsenal to choose from and something more significant to give up for Soundwave's event because Jeff and I have a plan.

Also, ridiculous weapons that make no sense.
