Information: Character Requests

about character requests

This is an all-purpose page for requesting the most common things you'd need mod permission for. In general, characters in Singularity enjoy broad freedoms with what they can do and acquire; it's only high-risk, rare and/or questionable items that will need to be cleared in advance. Don't worry-- almost all requests will have no problem whatsoever being approved, and if we have some concerns, we're much more likely to discuss it with you than reject anything.

This is also the page to request canon updates for your characters.

item requests

items from the junkyard

Characters can obtain raw materials from the Junkyard, aka Zone 00, the string room where they appeared when first arriving on Sacrosanct. Scrap metal, raw elements, structures and devices can all be found here. Most of these materials, like metals and normal devices (music players, carpentry tools, computer hardware) do not need to be requested here; just assume your character found them. If it's something more advanced or dangerous, we'd appreciate it if you erred on the side of caution and checked it with us first.

Some items you might find in the Junkyard that you can request (not an exhaustive list):
  • Guns
  • Advanced computer equipment
  • Dangerous and/or fictional elements
  • Alien technology
  • Premodern technology
  • Small dinosaurs
In general, living creatures are okay so long as they aren't pests or very large or dangerous. So, no tribbles, sorry.

canon updates

Canon updates work a little differently in Singularity than in other games. Instead of characters "going home" and returning, the IC explanation for canon updates is this:

Any character that appears on Sacrosanct is, at the moment before he/she/it comes through the space/time rift, understood to be at the most updated version of their canon. This is a floating state for those characters with unfinished canons. The rift is responsible for concealing memories and even changing the physical forms of those who pass through it. For example, a character who loses their hand and has it replaced by a chainsaw may appear in Sacrosanct with their flesh hand fully intact and no memory of the chainsaw. However, because the rift interacts with the teleporters on the station (there is, in fact, a teleporter just inside the rift itself that seems to still be connected to the rest of the network, but cannot be physically accessed), any time a character uses a teleporter he/she/it runs the "risk" of being canon updated. Memories may appear and even physical changes may occur. So our example character might walk into one teleporter with his hand and out another teleporter with his chainsaw, suddenly remembering the events that led up to it.

How exactly is this possible? Hypatia isn't quite sure and likes to pretend things that are beyond her ability to predict don't exist, and the rift itself doesn't answer questions.

Some players may wish to canon update their characters with new items or equipment. If the item in question is larger than would feasibly fit inside a regular teleportation unit (which is meant to accommodate one or two people at a time), the character being updated will find themselves spat out from a teleporter nearest the Junkyard, and their item will be waiting for them there if the character chooses to go look.

Please note that characters are welcome to request items without requiring a canon update. For example, if you want to request Kevin Flynn's lightcycle for Sam instead of his substandard Grid lightcycle, but don't want to update Sam to that particular part of the movie, the Kevin Flynn lightcycle can be requested as a simple item request without a canon update. In that scenario, however, the piece of equipment in question may or may not be unfamiliar to the character, and that must be reflected in their actions accordingly.

character modifications

Some players employ the teleporters to temporarily change their character, whether to another species, sex, or into another person’s body entirely. For the most part, you are free to do this without requiring mod permission; however, if the modification you’re planning on is more complicated or involves more than immediate CR, please drop it here to let us look it over.

It's definitely going to do a number on her cheerfulness, at least for a while. She's been having a bit of a quiet crisis of faith already, and ending up in Sacrosanct instead of heaven (or, more likely in her opinion, Purgatory) is going to do a real number on her, as glad as she'll be to be able to be back with everyone. While other people from other universes might have different gods and afterlifes (something that doesn't really phase her), God is supposed to be all-powerful in her universe, and when people die, their souls are supposed to go to one of three specific places. If she is brought to Sacrosanct instead, that means that somehow God is not powerful enough to keep her, which means that he is not all-powerful, which means that maybe everything she thought about religion and God is wrong. She'd been struggling with the fact that she'd been doubting, but it wasn't a complete loss of faith. This is pretty much going to destroy that for her - though whether she finds a way to still believe in God later remains to be seen. It's been such a big part of her life for so long that losing that is going to make her feel like she's completely lost her footing, and it'll make her reconsider a lot of things she's believed up to this point that were tied into that.

While she's trying to process everything, she's going to stop writing. Which is a HUGE deal for her - she's always been writing something since she was a kid, even when she was sad or upset. It's how she's processed or dealt with a lot of the (admittedly less traumatic) low points in her life. She'll withdraw a lot from the people she's close to, and talk more with people she doesn't know as well, just to have someone to talk to that isn't worried about her, even if it's not about anything important. It's quite likely that she'll end up taking a lot of her anger at herself and the God that suddenly appears to not exist out on the people closest to her.

She WILL get through it, eventually, but it'll be a process. May is probably the one person she won't entirely push away, though it'll probably see-saw a bit between trying to lean on May and pushing her away, mostly because she's a little in love with her, and falling moreso all the time. And I've no doubt Karkat will give as good as he gets as far as yelling goes, and may be able to get some admissions out of her.

She'll be back to happy sparkly Buffy after a while, but it won't be quite so naive.

...Also, she'll probably make a habit of not wearing anything short-sleeved. Which given her usual t-shirts and tank tops style is going to be a big change. And initially her wardrobe will definitely dip into the "more subdued" category along with her personality. Because I'm sure you're very concerned about her fashion choices in approving this canon update. XD

Your Name: Brig
Character Name: Erik
Character Journal: [personal profile] metalwield
Reference Point of the Canon Update: eight months post-movie
How Will This Change the Character?: In a nutshell, enough time will have passed for Erik to settle into his new role as the Brotherhood's leader and come to terms with it. He'll also have discovered x number of justifications for his chosen path, ie. incidents of violence against mutants, official or unofficial government responses across the world that bode ill for mutants, other examples of mutants being held captive or being experimented on, various bad-for-mutants situations that call for immediate action or retaliation, etc. He'll have gotten over most of his feels about the past, at least the ones interfering with his resolve, and set himself firmly on the terrorist/mutant defender course because it's become crystal clear someone has to and he can't trust anyone else to do it.

This will make him more racist against humans but not unwilling to interact. As he's now occupying a political position, or what he hopes will become a political position, he'll be less concerned about personal paranoia and more concerned with public image, how he presents himself to other mutants and to his subordinates, and whether his actions betray any weakness or lack of resolve. He'll have a public mask, equal parts charming and implacable, becoming whatever the situation requires, but in private he'll withdraw even further emotionally. He doesn't want confidants or friends who know too much about him or his history. Even the name 'Erik Lehnsherr' is something he wants to distance himself from, using aliases instead. Mystique is the occasional exception, being the only person that Erik allows to take liberties, and he's more likely to cave to something she asks, but he still prioritizes his position over everything else.

Your Name: Jayde
Character Name: Barricade
Character Journal: [personal profile] namesnotprowl
Reference Point of the Canon Update: To his drop from Axiom (i.e. when he gets his exit visa and goes home in April 2011), and then to the end of DotM to shortly before is potential off-screen death via the US military. A truncated relevant history is located here in order to keep from cluttering this comment more.

How Will This Change the Character?: Barricade will be returning with a lot of damage. As far as physical damage, he has lost three of his four optics to sniper fire, and both of his legs below the knee to two well-placed bombs, as well as damage to his upper legs and torso thanks to shrapnel. The optics will be simple enough for him – or another medic – to replace (though their color balance will likely be off for a few weeks until he gets them adjusted to the proper red), though before they are his field of vision will be significantly reduced and his depth perception will be basically nil. His legs will be a whole different affair. They can be repaired, but it will take at least two months for Barricade to gather the supplies and reconstruct them, and likely a while longer than that to get accustomed to walking again, with no guarantee that he will walk without limping. Until then, he won’t be able to access his vehicle mode, as essential parts are still going to be missing, even with his tires located on his arms and shoulders.

More importantly, he’ll be coming back a whole slew of new psychological damage. Thanks mostly to Decepticon comm lines, he knows that Starscream and Shockwave’s driller were both destroyed in combat; compound that with the loss of Soundwave and Megatron’s inability to function – and the Autobots’ stubborn refusal to die – and the whole Chicago thing starts to add up to a major catastrophe in the making. Barricade is smart enough to realize that his home planet, the thing he’s fought to save the entire war, will likely be destroyed once and for. Surviving the destruction of Cybertron was something he’d never expected to do and he will take the loss outrageously hard. He’ll be openly hostile to those in the military and those that support the military on-station (for what he’s suffered), and will also be more hostile to any of his Autobots that happen to already be on or arrive on the station (for their part in the loss of Cybertron). Thankfully with his memories of Axiom intact, he’s less likely to take out his ire on non-Tyrans… though versions of Optimus Prime are likely to get initial bouts of bristling and angry questioning from him. One can never be too sure if they would go the route of his own, after all. He will be wary of dealing with humans, but it won't stop him from conversing with them. The details of what happened he’s likely to keep from other Tyrans, particularly the Autobots, out of some cruel sense of vengeance. He wants them to find out about Sentinel Prime defecting to the Decepticons and the ravaging of Chicago for themselves.

Additionally, the loss of his legs and subsequently the loss of mobility will be a serious blow to his ego and the feeling of self-sufficiency he’s attempted to cultivate recently. He’s going to be less likely to try to hide his anger and frustration with the whole situation, but do his best to reclaim his independence in whatever way is possible… even if that means engaging in unnecessary cruelty towards whoever happens to have mistreated him recently, and especially if it means trying to sublimate that rage into something useful – most likely building or finding himself a wheelchair built for giant freaking robots.

Any Large Items?: Just one – an energy-firing rifle with a firing action and recoil similar to a shotgun. Unlike his other weapons it is not directly configured from his body parts, and is a held weapon. It packs a considerable punch but – given how close he is when he shoots Que/Wheeljack – likely doesn’t have the range of some of his other weapons. It’s not shown if it stores on his person or what; Barricade will likely find a way to build a holster for it out of leather and a harness to sling it behind his shoulder to deal with this gap.

Your Name: Larissa
Character Name: Agent Washington (OU)
Character Journal: [personal profile] articletwelve
Reference Point of the Canon Update: A couple of weeks after the end of Season 8/Revelation, enough time for Wash to have joined up with the Blue Team and gone back to their base to start living in hiding with them but before the events that led up to the last scene in Season 9. (Whatever those events are, gdit burnie.)
How Will This Change the Character?: Mostly character development. While Wash has heard that he ends up on the Blue Team, the information came from other simulation soldiers, so it's a little difficult for him to wrap his head around. In addition, he comes from a point right before Epsilon-Church goes into the memory unit, so Wash has spent his time on the station thinking that if/when he goes back, he'll be able to do something about that. Finding out that Epsilon's trapped in the memory unit and beyond any chance of restoration (...until season 9) will help him actually start to find some closure. (That, and the realization that his lot in life is to end up with Caboose. Voluntarily. He might be rethinking that plan.) Technically, he should pop back out in blue and yellow armor instead of his usual gray; I haven't decided whether or not to go with that yet.
Any Large Items?: n/a

Your Name: Danzy, Pura (posting on her behalf)
Character Name: Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd
Character Journal: [personal profile] assguardian, [personal profile] crotcharrow
Reference Point of the Canon Update: Children's Crusade #9, all the way to the end of the issue - the Young Avengers, or what's left of them, are being called on by Captain America, and are now officially assimilated to the Avengers team.

How Will This Change the Character?:
Billy: Canon-updated Billy has so much guilt from the events in CC#9; from surviving Cassie's death, witnessing Nate's murder of Jonas and his full-fledged treading onto the path of becoming Kang the Conqueror, and Eli's leaving the team, Billy feels that he's as much to blame for what has happened as much as Wanda and Doom are for having interfered too much in things he now feels he shouldn't have become involved in. He's spent a number of months being depressed about the events in Children's Crusade to the point that it takes an official Avengers call and the threat of a break-up with Teddy to get him to do something about himself.

Tommy: Canon-updated Tommy, like Billy, has a lot of guilt to manage for what happened during Children's Crusade, but with a telling difference - showing the depth by which his character has grown, Tommy proves himself the one most willing to continue being a Young Avenger, despite the losses the team has suffered, because it's the right thing to do. Going beyond his personal reasons - the team being his family, having no other place to go, having little choice beyond being an Avenger (considering that was why he was broken out of juvie in the first place) - Tommy's gone above and beyond being a teenager playing dress-up and getting in trouble, and vaulted himself right into Hero territory. (Pura will add to this if needed.)

Both: On the positive end - for some measure of positive - Billy's and Tommy's relationship as brothers have been cemented by sheer trial of fire. They live together now at the Kaplan household, and along with Teddy they are a daily fixture in each other's lives. They now have some semblance of family feelings for each other, instead of the vague, tentative claiming of each other as brothers initially. After the whole CC arc, they've blown through that wall that's keeping them from openly calling each other brothers - and with Wanda now actively being a presence in their lives, it's safe to say that they're going down the road of how Wanda and Pietro are like with each other.

Back to the sad side, though - with half the team roster gone, Tommy and Billy are going to be somewhat wary towards discussing some of the things that have happened, and while there aren't any physical scars, a few months are not enough to finish grieving the deaths and loss of friends they've fought with and risked their lives for.

Any Large Items?: None! Except maybe for their team uniforms again.
crotcharrow: (i've seen enough hentai...)

[personal profile] crotcharrow 2012-03-08 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I can add to Tommy is that he's suffering a lot with the break up of his makeshift family. He desperately tries to keep them all together, and hopes that continuing on the Hero path would keep them together. It doesn't work, and Tommy isn't really sure what this means for him afterward. He's got a lot of work to do to try and get back to a point where he can function in society when he's not hiding behind a mask. It's daunting, and he'd much rather punch some sentinels in the face than try and figure out school, real life and everything in between again. Being around Teddy and Billy helps, but since Billy spends a lot of the months after being depressed, there's only so much Tommy can do before he just loses hope that his brother will break out of it any time soon. He wants to be a hero but not without his family along for the ride too.

How Your Character is Obtaining It: Found it in the Junkyard while looking for something to fix her old armor with.
