about jobs

Characters do not have to take jobs in Singularity in order to live, but many will find them necessary to be able to experience many liberties. For this reason, the game offers ways to obtain work credits and chits.

Work credits do not act as money, but as a measure of a character's monthly allowance and housing. Unless transferred to another character or removed by Hypatia, work credits are permanent and do not go away.

Chits are the monetary allowance given to characters who have work credits. Chits function exactly like currency, and more work credits provide more chits, just as seniority at a traditional job comes with a larger salary. Chits are disbursed monthly, in a multiple of 100 x work credits. A character with 1 work credit has a monthly allowance of 100 chits, a character with 10 work credits has an allowance of 1000 chits, and so on. Any goods or services besides housing are paid for out of a character's allowance.

There is no OOC price listing for goods on Sacrosanct, but the following table provides a decent estimate of what a character can afford on their allowance. Housing is guaranteed, and beyond that, character can afford all the privileges listed under their work credit level, just barely at the lower end of the listed range, and comfortably at the upper. If they would like something above that level, they will either need to save up, or live below their means in another area. Someone with a taste for gourmet food can forego automation and indulge their culinary preferences, while someone who doesn't mind living on the Sacrosanct version of Kraft Dinner can have a robobutler mixing in that "cheese" packet for them.

For IC purposes, the work credit system is a holdover from that used by the original human survey team. Originally the station had only that system, but as more people arrived through the rift and distinct communities began to spring up among her guests, Hypatia implemented a currency on top of the credits system.

While neither credits nor chits hold much value in the Underworld, many employers will offer them to characters who go between Asphodel and Sacrosanct. Of course, if your character has no need for credits, they can always bargain for some other sort of compensation.

Can I buy, trade, steal or counterfeit work credits or chits? Yep! If your character has the means and know-how, they absolutely may. Whether they get away with it is another thing, but Hypatia is often just as fascinated with renegades as she is by those who follow the rules. Still, counterfeiting credits comes with the risk that Hypatia or one of her representatives will "request" favors from the counterfeiter with the threat of revoking the hacked assets, and the offer of, perhaps, legitimizing a few of those assets. A little quid pro quo occurs in every society, right? See the Requests page for more. All credit-hacking must be cleared through the Requests page.

jobs on sacrosanct

We no longer provide detailed OOC descriptions of Sacrosanct jobs. Instead, we list the number of jobs available in a given month, and how many credits they provide, and players may flesh out the job on their own, as suits their character's skills and interests. These jobs do not have to be played out, and there is an OOC limit of one job per player per month from the list. Once they're gone, they're gone. However, players may suggest additional jobs if the job would result in CR and performing the job is played out. Maintenance jobs that would require multiple characters, complex jobs that would need more than one character's skills, public and obvious jobs that would attract curious spectators, or hosting a party at Hypatia's behest for a major Tau Cetian holiday would all be examples of CR-building jobs.

The goal of this system is twofold. First, it allows any character to take a job--a player is better able to come up with something their character to do than the mods are to think of jobs for everyone. Second, it provides an incentive for new CR. If you're using the jobs system, please make sure to allow everyone a chance at the generalized job list; don't show up every month and sign up for a high-credit job. Likewise, players should branch out who they perform CR jobs with. If a character is only ever working with their castmates or existing CR, that's defeating the purpose.

We know that some people aren't interested in dealing with the economy in the game, and that's fine. To that end, we have a list of jobs that any character can do, and aren't limited to a certain number of slots per month. These jobs can only be performed once per character and exist on an OOC level to allow players to ignore the credit system if they prefer.

Hypatia's job listings are available on Sacrosanct's official information pages on the station network. She will also occasionally make an announcement on the network requesting help for a special project. These may be solo or team missions and usually involve a reward of a significantly higher sum of credits than normal jobs.

blood donation Paid blood donations have opened up in Residential zones 01, 05, 08, and 13. Though a donation is less energy-intensive than cloning blood supplies, Hypatia has judged the small number of guests on the station worth the energy expenditure, which, if anyone was curious, amounts to a rounding error in the power consumption curve for any given residential neighborhood. Anyone who donates not only gets paid, but has a guaranteed blood match should they ever be injured severely enough to require it. 01
cultural survey Hypatia is interested in the civilizations of her visitors. She is willing to provide a work credit in exchange for answering a (rather extensive) series of questions about the world and culture a character hails from. Multiple characters from the same canon can fill out this questionnaire. Everyone's experience and understanding is slightly different, after all, and more data allow for more solid conclusions. 01
IQ test As with the cultural questionnaire, Hypatia is curious about the intellectual aptitude of various species, and will exchange a work credit for an IQ test. This is not the type of test a human from the 21st century might expect--it's as close to culturally independent as possible, and beings with the right kind of neurological structure are hooked up to an fMRI scanner while taking it. 01
physical workup To add to the station's already extensive store of data, Hypatia will pay in exhange for visitors agreeing to be poked, prodded, lie in a claustrophobic scanner, and generally be manhandled by drones for an afternoon. This test is not biased toward organics; anyone with a body can agree to subject themselves to it. It's unpleasant, but harmless to everything but one's dignity, and will warn a character about any health conditions. The medical drones won't treat those conditions unless they're immediately life-threatening, though. 01
pain tolerance evaluation Why is Hypatia interested in this?
You probably don't want to know, but she'll pay, and it's just nerve induction (or the inorganic equivalent), so no damage. Physically, anyway.

jobs on asphodel

These jobs are provided as an OOC reference. Characters need to find and gain the trust of the Underworld before they can seek jobs there. Usually, this can be done by gaining the trust of Lev or hacking into one of his transmissions to find the Underworld's current location.

job description compensation
smuggling There is an Underworld insurgent who specializes in cracking locked software. Bring him a boot disk from one of Sacrosanct's secure maintenance stations without involving anyone else. Risk level: Medium. 10 work credits
organ running An insurgent medic is in dire need of organs, three hearts and two livers, all O-. No questions asked. Risk level: High. 1 body mod
raw materials A member of the insurgency is looking for 12 liters of liquid wonderflonium. You don't wanna know. Risk level: Low. freeze ray
intel gathering [ongoing, multiple] Lev needs some residents of Sacrosanct to gather intel on its operation for him. The reward depends on what you find. Risk level: Low. varies
While many insurgents and black market types in the Underworld will offer credits to station-dwellers, these are counterfeits, and might not always have a clean paper trail. Some mods and illicit material might also have trouble being allowed back onto the station. Again, everything is a trade off. If your character finds a reward is unsatisfactory, they can attempt to bargain for a different one.
