faq ;

Q: My character has a particular injury, disease or defect. Do I have to get it cured on arrival?
A: Occasionally, Hypatia may decide to leave a particular injury or defect untreated, provided it's not life-threatening, if she finds it makes the visitor more "interesting." So, yes! You can absolutely say Hypatia left something untreated. However, any injuries sustained in the Junkyard will still be seen to. On the flip side, if your character is coming in with a health problem or such that would impede play, like having terminal cancer or being poisoned, you can choose to have Hypatia remove this. Use with care, because you can't decide to give your character their illness back at a later time.

Q: How do characters use the bracelets?
A: After being escorted out of the Junkyard, characters are given a small wearable for their wrist. It's small, thin, clear, flexible, and --don't worry-- completely removable. When worn, the bracelet glows faintly with a string of numbers, acting as a taskbar. Pressing them, or flicking your wrist in the right way, will open the first screen of a touchable holographic operating system. This is your all-purpose smartphone, laptop and game peripheral for everything in Singularity.

Where appropriate, mechanical characters, people with high-tech suits, and other synthetics/cyborgs might find the navigation system installed on their HUD instead. Even though most will have starter equipment like this, there are plenty of other wearable computing options and upgrades characters can obtain for the same, but more fashionable, network functionality.

Q: How versatile is the station's holographic technology?
A: It's the closest thing to magic. In any given location, indoors or outdoors, in residential or garden zones, characters can create fully 3D, touchable holograms, from vidscreens to augmented reality overlays. The holographic capabilities at Asphodel's station-controlled carbon plants are a little more limited, but mostly the same.

Q: Do the things ever go off on accident?
A: While it is possible to mess up the filter or post options to post something accidentally, the devices don't ~*~turn on by themselves~*~. In particular, they will never activate when not being worn. That is, unless there's a Hypatia Is A Creeper event going on...

Q: What about filter hacking?
A: The standard security settings for network filters are incredibly strong. Your character needs to be canonly gifted at hacking to do it, though of course they can learn or receive help over time too.

Q: Do characters all speak the same language?
A: All written text throughout Sacrosanct and station-controlled areas of Asphodel identify the user's language and automatically translate. A similar process is handled in realtime during conversation. All of this is run off characters' wearables, so removing or deactivating them will render all text and speech incomprehensible, except in languages they already know. The insurgency also runs its own pirated version of the same translation software, which doubles as an encryption protocol to hide certain transmissions. Both methods have a 99.99999% uptime rate, but you never know when a Tower of Babel event will come along...

Q: Okay, so what does untranslated "native" sound like?
A: If you can imagine English and Mandarin having a baby, a mutant baby, that's half verbalized chatspeak, and has no linguistic rules you'd recognize, you'd be getting close.

Q: Are there NPCs?
A: The only NPC on Sacrosanct is Hypatia. On Asphodel, in addition to Lev, there is the human insurgency which might number in the hundreds. They're hard to find, though. Players are free to handwave interactions with them but need permission to kill any since, well, they won't replenish. :(

Q: Are there crimes in Singularity? Is there a justice system?
A: Despite her namesake, Hypatia isn't usually interested in punishing visitors, unless they do something to piss her off. Crimes committed against the insurgency usually come back to bite the character in the ass, so things like murder and assault should be inquired about on the Requests page before being implemented. Keep in mind, however, that just because there isn't mod regulation of criminal activity does not mean characters are not accountable if other characters have a problem with yours.

Q: What happens to dead bodies after respawn?
A: They don't combust or vanish, if that's what you want to know. Respawn is basically cloning, so revived characters are fully capable of stumbling upon their own corpse, which will decompose at the normal rate. The same goes for Underworld NPCs, who don't respawn at all, because they don't use teleporters.

Q: Are characters at all aware that they've died and been respawned?
A: Nope! The action involved in respawning and teleportation is absolutely the same, so there's no immediate way to discern between one and the other. They will not even be aware time has passed. Fortunately, their wearables will respawn with them, and immediately synchronize with station records as soon as they exit the teleporter, so while your character himself might not know what happened, a quick check of the public surveillance cameras will hopefully get him up to speed. Those gifted in programming can also create routines that analyze surveillance footage and user biostats to send a message to the programmer in the case of death.

Q: All these job listings on the Job Board aren't possible for my character. How can I earn work credits?
A: You can also ask another character to do the job for you and transfer the credits in exchange for a favor or item. If your character is gifted electronically, they might also be able to counterfeit credits or get what they want by illegal means. The listings on the job board are always changing, however, so if your character's the straight and narrow kind you might find a suitable one soon!

Q: Why is muncesting not allowed, but playing two characters who "go together" is?
A: It's a difference in intent. Let's use the characters 3 and 4 from 9 as an example: they function as basically the same person in two bodies. Their major interaction would not so much be with each other as with other characters. That is why it must be done responsibly: players found to be interacting too heavily with themselves will be asked to stop, or failing that, to drop one of the characters.

Q: Why are "adult" logs with players set at 18 and above, but can involve teenaged characters as long as they're not "obviously" underaged?
A: Because characters are fictional, no matter what Canada says. And for as controversial as it sometimes may be for RPers, the "age" given to certain characters, especially in Japanese media, is incredibly arbitrary. It's often a matter of audience appeal more than realism. That said, you can have a shotabait 19-year-old just as much as a worldly 12-year-old, which is where the Keep It Tasteful rule comes into play. We don't want to sit around debating what is offensive or not. If a mod asks you to cut or warn for something, do it. If we ask you to stop or move a thread or log to a journal/musebox, please follow instructions. Failure to do so may result in mod action.

Q. So I'm from this sex game where we have to--
A: Stop right there. Remember the Keep It Tasteful rule. Yes, we allow you to import characters' memories from previous games, but don't go all creeper on the nearest loli about what your character used to do every Friday night. We're not a DR, and we're definitely not a sex DR.

Q. I have a question that isn't listed here.
A: Feel free to comment with it below!

TWO (2) questions that might get kind of tl;dr bluhhhhh

1. I'm working on an app for THIS DUDE, with carried over CR from his previous game. At said previous game, he had a sort of evil twin that existed as his reflection. I'd like to bring this evil twin with him if I app, but I want to make sure that would be alright/make sense. How it worked in the original game was the twins were normally trapped in the mirrorworld, where they could observe everything on the real side but couldn't speak to/be seen by/physically interact with people on the other side, except by drawing or writing on a reflective surface. They can also switch places with their real self, which would trap them in the mirrorworld instead, but since that would require methods that wouldn't exist in Sacrosanct I assume it would be impossible unless some sort of plot was worked out or something. Basically, he would be stuck in Sacrosanct's mirrorworld and only be able to interact with anyone by doodling on mirrors or whatever, and most of that would probably be just to troll the hell out of his real self.

I'd have a much more detailed explanation of the mechanics and whatnot of the mirrorworld stuff in the app, but just going by the concept would that be something I could do?

2. I have a shy friend who wants to app an AU of a character, but said AU is a mashup of the original canon and another one. The characters of the original canon are still all present, it's just the setting is changed to the second canon. All the stuff on AUs seems to just be about changing things based on the original canon, so is apping from an AU combining two canons allowed?

Concerning your policy on mecha—

After reading that you'd prefer if we scaled them down from their original sizes, I wanted to ask does this mean they're unpilot-able? I assume with a rescale that in order to keep the original designs of the Gundam/Eva, that the cockpits would also be scaled down. Or would the universe somehow make it so the cockpits are the original sizes without compromising the design of the mecha?

hey! i'm looking to app ventus from kingdom hearts as an alternate. most of the events remain the same, and the characters (aside from one) are all the same as they are in canon. the only thing i'm iffy about whether it's okay or not is that he's had a memory wipe, and gone through some of roxas' development as well, since he's based on the theory that roxas has ventus heart with some twists in there.

would this be acceptable? his history and personality sections are pretty detailed, if that's a concern.

Hello! I am apping as an AU character from Homestuck who is genderbent (Sis Strider). However, I will be taking her from an AU where [spoilers: ]

Would this be acceptable as an AU despite the genderbending?

I have a random question that I figured I'd put here so that all the mods can look it over and decide since I want to be more careful about making assumptions and stuff fjdkal

Uh so. I have a character I'm considering, and his biology allows him to actually live in the vacuum of space for extended periods. In other words he would theoretically be able to hang out outside of the space station or on the surface of Asphodel. I'm wondering if this would be okay in terms of actual gameplay, since I know a good part of the plot revolves around not being able to leave Sacrosanct or Asphodel and all. The living-in-space thing is pretty intrinsic to certain aspects of his character, but there are a couple of things I could to keep him either unable to leave the space station or unable to travel far enough in space to explore further than Asphodel, or what have you.

I'm considering applying for an AU Riku here, but I'm curious about a few details regarding his AU.

Mainly, since KH features a lot of Disney elements, would it be acceptable to incorporate a few elements from the films that weren't really touched upon in-game?

I ask this because I'd like to use a part of Pinocchio's world-- Pleasure Island-- as a part of the story progression. I'd adapt it to fit into KH logic, making it so it's not only a place for bad little boys to run rampant, but also infested with Heartless. Naturally, it would also have its own Keyhole.

It looks like canon mashups aren't allowed, but the KH series does feature the characters from Pinocchio, and 358/2 Days originally had a world based on the film. Still, I just want to check before I work on an app.

And on another note, is it acceptable to feature Disney worlds that haven't appeared in the series yet? That's not really a problem for this particular AU, but I'm just curious. :o

I actually forgot about this for awhile and forgot to include it in my app I think, ohgodwhy. But anyway, I'm wondering if it's okay for Jin to have his two roboty friends with him. They're two semi-sentient clockwork robots shaped like cats and together they make his Clockwork Scythe that was mentioned in the app. They're mobile and can function on their own if he winds them up with his clock key. But since they're theoretically as "alive" as Pino is, I figured I should formally ask. If it's not okay I think I'll put in a request somewhere down the line if that's okay :x

I have a few questions! For the application, we're required to provide a reference link. What happens if there isn't a reference link available? Or worse, the reference link contains erroneous information and fanon that has long since been debunked by official translations and sources?

[identity profile] banerry.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm considering apping a character with previous-game history and CR-- however, the game I'd be porting from is [livejournal.com profile] dramadramaduck, which allows characters to stay on their own worlds while connected to an interdimensional nexus that allows for cross-universe communication and travel. Because of this, the character's timeline, canon, and home world were affected by in-game plots and events, and she's kind of turned into an AU character from an AU setting. In addition, she ended up living in another canon's universe and training to take part in a major organization there (specifically the AX division of the Vatican from Trinity Blood canon). There aren't any TB characters Singularity currently, but I don't know how acceptable it'd be for me to app her with this as part of her previous game plot/development. Is this okay, or do I need to edit it out of her history/should I not app her at all? (In case more info is needed, I have a post explaining the plot here (http://peoplesprincess.livejournal.com/141047.html).)

I had a question about a character I'm thinking of apping. The character's kind of unique so...yeah.

Basically the character is Kyubey from Mahou Magica and his job is to contract young girls to become magical girls. The girls gain assorted magical powers and outfits to match. The girls then fight entities called witches which are invisible manifestations of despair and grief. They cause shit like suicides and stuff. The implication is that witches appear wherever there are humans because humans naturally will have feelings of despair and so on etc.

So basically I'm wondering:

Would he be able to contract people at Sing? AKA grant people new or extra magic powers? Obviously it would be the kind of thing organized between muns. The contract involves him granting a wish, so obviously this would have to be limited--he couldn't exactly send people home or anything.
Would there be witches for these magical girls to fight? Usually they're invisible to most people but that can be handwaved. Witches can also be sort of event-worthy type things or like "man that one area of the station just seems kinda unpleasant lately" or something.

A lot of this can be tweaked and such but basically I'm just wondering if it would even be possible to swing this.

[identity profile] alphabethead.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
What time exactly do apps close? I didn't see a specific time mentioned on the app page and I don't want to post it too late if I get it finished in time.

Thanks!

Seeing the recent influx of Portal characters kind of inspired me.

Would a turret be appable? I feel they have enough personality to be playable. I thought specifically I'd like to app a quirky turret that appears briefly in canon, assuming that its personality is mostly the basic turret one, but there's a lot of room for headcanon so I'm not sure if it's veering too far into fan-character territory.

[identity profile] innamoramento.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Just for clarification: The closely-related-characters rule mentions siblings as not being kosher to app. Is this still the case for OCs? I'm currently playing Conrit Ceto here, and I find that the setting/cast would probably work well for his older brother, Ladon, but I'd like to keep Conrit and the CR he's been building. I'm just checking to see if it's possible for me to app Ladon without having to drop Conrit. Thanks.

[identity profile] i-would-kindly.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
In order to play Ladon, you would have to drop Conrit. They're relationship seems to be a positive one, and there's no reason for them to be avoiding each other/never interact.

Okay so I have a question! I'm sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, I couldn't really figure it out: my character is new, has no credits, etc. He's been living in the default space, which is all cheap and stuff.

My question is, where in the station are they located? Is it in any specific area, or are they—the cheapo free living—scattered around? In other words, do I get to "pick" what zone he ended up staying in?

Also, how many credits does it cost to buy stuff? For example, I signed Den up to donate blood. That's one credit a week. What would that buy? One meal, five meals? How many credits for, say, a set of clothes? How many to move to an apartment? Obviously exact numbers aren't needed, I'm just curious as to approximately how much money one credit comes to. I saw your table, but it didn't really clarify—if Denmark has one credit, is that a week's rent or a week of fast food? Or both? A trip to a bar? All at once, or mixed up?

Speaking of clothes, are there any places for the poor to get clothing, toiletries, etc.? I assume there are, but I couldn't find anything listed pffff.

FINALLY mostly out of curiosity, do characters have to live in the residential zones? That is, in the garden zones, especially the ones with farmland, are there also buildings/farm houses? Would it be possible for, say, a character to build himself a house in the "country," given the materials/money/etc.? Or say, run their own farm, grow their own things to eat, etc.?

I have a couple of questions concerning a character I'm thinking of apping. She comes from a world where literally everyone is infected with basically a zombie plague. In its dormant state it can merely cause assorted medical problems. In its active state, it makes you turn into a zombie. The thing is, the disease itself is basically as contagious as the common cold, which means that as soon as she enters the station, she'll be spreading the disease to all the human residents.

So my questions are this--would she indeed be spreading her disease to the other humans on the station? Or would the station somehow neutralize the virus before it could reach others? I figure either that would be the option, or maybe I could throw up a permission post when I bring her in, and the players of human residents could decide for themselves if they want to be infected?

The second question is, I know that the teleporters fix mortal injuries and such--do they also kill terminal diseases? In other words, would the teleporters cure her zombie plague?

I have a question concerning an OC I'd like to eventually app.

He's a character that I played in a tabletop rp, and the GM pulled in some rather... unusual elements, some of which directly affected my character - namely Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep, and an altered version of the Other Mother from Coraline (implied; she was only referred to as such OOCly).

Additionally, but less relevant to my character's story, other players in the game brought in elements such as a revenant named Herbert West, a player character that was a deranged H.P. Lovecraft, and naming a country Latveria (however, no Doctor Doom was involved at any point).

What I want to know is whether (and/or which of) these references to established fictional works are acceptable due to the character originating from a tabletop rp; and if not, what sort of change(s) would be required?

Hi there! I have a few quick questions.

First of all, on the setting portion of the app, what exactly are you looking for? Do you want backstory? All the details? or just what is relevant to the character? The character I'm thinking of apping is from the 2003 Battlestar Galactica, which has a fairly comprehensive setting so I just want to know what I should focus on. (The character is Leoben for the record).

Also, I'm thinking of bringing him in with memories from another game, and was just wondering if I needed to include that game's setting as well? I'm assuming yes, so what sort of detail should I be going into with that? (Ie: game setting, direct events, cr, etc?)

I hope that my questions made sense and thanks.

I am considering apping a character who is, basically, a god. Not only that, he exists in almost all continuities in his canon, even if in some it is only implied because people use his name to swear by.

I fully understand restricting his abilities, and physical size (he's a planet), and I am thinking through some slightly AU ideas which will do exactly that.

Probably the only issue I'm concerned about is that I would prefer to play him with at least basic knowledge of all parts of his native canon. We're talking about him knowing of dozens of different dimensions and timelines (though the restrictions I have in mind would mean he does not retain comprehensive knowledge of absolutely everything, just the basic facts).

Just so you know, the character in question is Primus, from Transformers. When he makes appearances, usually his body is Planet Cybertron. Cybertron exists in every TF universe, though Primus is not necessarily present in all of them.
