Hi! Coffee here. Just stopping by to announce a tiny holiday event:
Spring Festival!
Ingame, today is Lunar New Year's Eve. The coming year is designated "Fire Tiger." This is mostly going to be innocuous, at first. In shops, incense, fireworks, firecrackers and red envelopes go on sale, and will be displayed in shop windows. Food stores and restaurants will be displaying
jiaozi and
niangao, as well as fish dishes and traditional foods meant to be eaten tonight and tomorrow. It should also be noted that the station's calendar declares this a station-wide holiday for today and the next two days. If there were steady work going on, all public offices would declare a a five-day weekend. Blood banks will be closed, and will re-open on Sunday.
Tomorrow is the Lunar New Year.
Holographic decorations went up in the night, preparing for the coming festival, which lasts for fifteen days. Characters should be on the lookout for the periodic
Lion Dances going on in parks throughout the Residential Zones. They may also choose to purchase a holographic troupe to perform a house blessing (cost - 1 credit). It is considered by some to be bad luck to light fires or use knives on this day, so pre-made food is available for purchase. There will also be a
public feast which will be available for all, free of charge (Before you even ask, yes Hardison, you're welcome too; it's open air, security can't really keep you out). This is traditional...for the
station, that is. A large holographic
fireworks display is scheduled in
Katayama, over Little Big Akihabara, in the evening. This is the day to visit the most senior members of your extended families.
The second day of the festival is for married daughters to visit their birth parents. It is also a day of prayer and blessing, as well as the "birthday of all dogs."
Food will be left out for dogs on the station, and residents are encouraged to be extra kind to them on this day. (This means you, Dug.)
The third day is a day to stay home and rest. Generally agreed to be a bad day to socialise or visit loved ones. Put your feet up and light a sparkler!
The fifth day is the birthday of the God of Wealth. More
fireworks~! Set some off to gain his favour, and good fortunes for you and yours.
Further, in-depth information on the holiday in-universe can be found at our
wikia article! There will be an open post for the festival, starting with the feast on the first night and the fireworks afterward. There will be open threads within for all your threadjacking needs. Like all events here, this one is optional. Celebrate (or don't) at your character's discretion.
[Edit] Oh, and for those who are intimidated by the size of the list in the article, by no means
at all should you think anyone is obligated to do all of these things. The information in the article is mostly history and culture, provided as a bit of world-building
. All actual participatory events are in
bold. Foods are provided as suggestions.
Happy Lunar New Year!
