E V E N T ; "Phase 4444"
Just a heads up for everyone about the next event.
Startingwhenever I finish the write up in the next couple days, Sacrosanct is going to experience a mysterious shut-down (lights down, power down, etc), and the back-up systems will kick in. Much of the station will go dark and be without power, except for emergency lights and such. There will also be glitches in the remaining systems, including one that will cause every holographic projector on the station to go haywire. For the duration of the event, parts of the station (open spaces, wilderness and garden areas) will have a touchable holographic overlay of the MMO game, Ever Breath of Fantasy MMXIV. This means your character can look at something he/she knows is an empty street or plaza and will see a generic rpg fantasy grassland, or wooded area, or even a beach with an accompanying lake or ocean. RPG Monsters will roam these areas but cannot affect your character, unless he or she chooses to log into the actual MMO game via their network device. Logging in will automatically generate a holographic "skin" for your character, either a default appearance (for example, T-800 will have a default holographic T-800 skin) that can be changed or customized if the character bothers to. You can either keep the default skin or choose a generic fantasy class. Otherwise, if your character has played the game previously, the skin will be of the RPG avatar (mage, paladin, etc) that your character had previously created. This skin is the only way to interact with game holograms, so don't bother emptying a clip into a holographic monster. Yet.
For characters who choose to log into the MMO, they can interact with the holograms exactly as if they were playing the game. Characters logging in for the first time will start at level 1, etc, and any monsters in the nearby vicinity will take notice of them.
Touchable holograms only have as much substance as the power being fed into them. In the beginning, the holograms will have some substance but can be pushed through, like pushing through water or gel. When the game decides that a holographic structure needs to be completely solid, it will become completely solid. To anyone with a holographic avatar skin, the holographic surfaces will be completely solid, as the game laws will not permit an avatar to walk through something that is meant to be solid inside the MMO.
Because the projectors are glitching, this holographic overlay will show up on any high tech HUD like the real thing, so heat readings will show objects that aren't really there, energy readings will be completely thrown off by the huge influx of power used to maintain the holograms, etc. Previous maps of the station will slowly become compromised, as the holograms will create structures and obstacles (buildings, locks, rifts in the ground) that, by the logic of the hyper-realistic game rules, will become dangerous. If the hologram says the floor is lava now, that floor will probably kill you somehow if you choose to ignore the hologram. Dangerous surfaces will often be electrified.
There are billions of projectors built into every surface of the station, so there are very few areas where the holograms would not be able to manifest, even in the wilderness areas.
For certain parts of residential areas, a different type of holographic overlay will appear. See the IC Event post for details.
Characters are not required to participate in the event, and can choose whether or not they want to bother with the holographic world that will slowly be enveloping the station during the event. The holograms will, of course, become increasingly more intrusive, but it's certainly possible for any character to find a safe place to hide and stay there.
EDIT: lol new stuff. The event will progress over several days with Phases updating everyone OOCly about what new things their characters will encounter. There will be a puzzle story to put together and also an NPC, this guy right here, helping things along if characters have IC questions. This is not an event that requires the players to accomplish certain goals for the event to end, so feel free to sit back and react, or sit it out, and we'll wrap up in maybe a weekor two, depending on how slowly I write.
As mentioned in the IC post, Hypatia will not be present during this event. New arrivals can still listen to automated messages telling them where they are and what is going on and directing them to the chemical showers etc, but Hypatia herself is for all intents and purposes offline and will not respond in realtime. Any new arrivals that need medical attention/rescue from the junkyard can still be rescued and given care in the medbays by automated drones without Hypatia's direct intervention.
More information will be available in the event start post, but if you have any questions about how the holographic technology works or about the event itself, please leave a comment here. OR YOU CAN CONTACT ME on aim at brigantinefranke or drop me an email at twopoinsettias@gmail.com or PM the NPC journal or idc.
