Emma's quite publicly known as a businesswoman, headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy and then of Xavier's, and a mutant. (That last came from Xavier's evil twin who was possessing his body at the time outing the whole school on national TV. I blame Grant Morrison.)

The Director of SHIELD would know she's also a former higher-up of the Hellfire Club, which is your standard bent-on-world-domination conspiracy only everyone dresses funny, but that her face turn appears to be sticking.

I love me some mutants, but X-Men is kind of AN ENORMOUS UNFOLLOWABLE MESS.

The Phoenix Saga (starting UXM #101) is a decent place to pick up, and then you can poke around to find out the major plot arcs of characters you like.
