Personality:

He's described as an "amiable, soft-spoken good ol' boy" on his biography and judging from the video and a few in-game responses, the Engineer is a polite and personable fellow. The Engineer is often depicted in official promotional material with a pleasant grin, not malicious, suggesting he's a cheery person most of the time. He's just happy to be doing what he does best: buildin' stuff. That isn't to say the man doesn't have a mean streak. When discussing the capabilities of his sentry guns, Engineer warns that "you best hope, [they're] not pointed at you" in a very dark and threatening tone that counters the warm and kind demeanor shown throughout the rest of the video. He isn't above making threats and trash talking in battle, but it seems that side of him only comes out where his job is concerned. Because his machines do most of the work, Engineer seems to be able to detach himself from who he is on and off the battlefield. He doesn't kill people, his guns do. He told you not to touch that darn thing, so it's not his fault if the opposing team are being dummies.

From the video, the Engineer is presented as being calm and cordial, having an air of confidence, but not to the point of arrogance. He's under enemy fire, but remains cool and collected enough to enjoy a beer and strum a tune on his guitar, knowing that his machines will eliminate any incoming enemies before they become any real threat to himself. The Engineer states with pride "I built that" in response to racking up sentry kills. He's pretty darn proud of the work he's put into his machines, showing that he's determined and ambitious in his endeavors, not one to slack off on the job because it'd make him look bad. In spite of his pride, he still remains a humble sort, saying "It weren't no thing" when successfully completing an objective.

If his vocabulary and the fact that he's got 11 PhDs in hard science weren't already any indication, the man is intelligent at a near genius level. His talk of practicality over philosophy suggests that he values reasoned, rational, and scientific thought over things such as faith and intuition which have no solid scientific grounding, though it'd be limiting to his education if he weren't open to more complex things that can't quantified. And though Engineer appears to keep calm and reasonable in high stress situations, that isn't to say that the Engineer is immune to pressure. In the heat of battle, he is capable of losing his cool in frustration. When his work is destroyed at the hands of an enemy, he will spout off mild curses and sound disappointed and upset in his responses. The man isn't devoid of such extremes of emotion, but other than such instances, the Engineer tries his best to keep his head level, retaining his ability to reason without his logic being clouded.
