I *believe* that if you have a grant / are otherwise being paid, you can't; but if you are like myself and are ENTIRELY dependent on loans (fuck you, scholarships, seriously, fuck you >( ) you can get them. One of my housemates totally has a shit ton, and I will be getting mine as soon as I have a month's worth of paycheck to prove that yes, my rent IS 75% of my paycheck why do you ask.
TL;DR - that is a lie, you can actually get food stamps as a student. At least in Massachusetts, dunno 'bout elsewhere. Use the Googlemobile, most places have online worksheets you can use to see if you're eligible :D
